Adolescent Substance Use Disorder Program at Alliance Health Center: Why Choose Us?
Through our affiliation with Foundations Recovery Network, Alliance Health Center offers an inpatient program for kids ages 12 to 17 with substance use disorder and underlying mental health challenges.
We offer one of the few extended-stay programs in the region focusing on substance use disorder in adolescents. With a length of stay of about 28 days, teens have space to connect with staff and take big steps toward sobriety. Our services draw people from across the country.
Highlights of the program include:
- Substance use disorder treatment for teens: Care includes group and individual therapy as well as medications to manage symptoms as needed. A therapy dog visits regularly, and your child can participate in a variety of recreational activities. Each day includes time at our on-site, accredited school so your child can keep up with their studies during treatment.
- Experience handling complex cases: Many of the teens we treat face disruptions at home or school or are in the care of CPS. Staff understand the toll these experiences can take. Working with steadiness and care, we help adolescents strive toward something better.
- Focus on life skills: Since many of our participants are approaching adulthood, we teach practical skills during their inpatient stay. This includes tasks such as managing money or finding a job. These efforts also reinforce communication, accountability and decision-making, so teens leave more prepared to take care of themselves after discharge.
- Family-centered care: In addition to family therapy, your child may have the opportunity to spend time with you during scheduled weekend visits and on holidays. As they progress through treatment, they may also earn passes to come home at other times. These visits help repair relationships and support the healing process.
Inpatient Psychiatric Care for Teens: What to Expect
Your child follows a structured schedule that includes therapeutic, educational and recreational services. Patients stay in gender-specific areas their entire stay. Boys go to the Bridges unit, and girls are on the Reflection unit.
Here’s what to expect:
- Group therapy: Your child learns about emotional regulation, peer relationships and substance use triggers. Group sessions enable your child to learn from others working toward similar goals.
- Individual counseling: One-on-one therapy is where many teens feel comfortable discussing what’s behind their substance use. We also explore how they’re feeling and what changes they want to make.
- Medication management: If your child is experiencing anxiety, depression or sleep issues, clinicians may recommend medications to address them. We carefully monitor your child’s response and adjust the plan if needed.
- Psychoeducation: We teach your teen how substance use affects the brain, body and relationships. Sessions also explore what recovery can look like, how to manage urges and make healthier choices in high-pressure situations.
- 12-step recovery support: Teens engage in group sessions inspired by the 12-step model, which emphasizes accountability, peer connection and personal growth.
- Recreation therapy: Each day includes relaxing activities like art, music, movement and time outside. There are also regular visits from a therapy dog. The goal is to help your child reconnect with things that bring joy.
- Discharge planning: Even in the early stages of recovery, we start thinking about what comes next for your child. Efforts may include identifying outpatient providers or advocating for living situations that support your child’s ongoing recovery.
